Fire safety compliance requirements are determined by the age of the property and any fire engineering reports active on the property. In nearly all cases there is no requirement to upgrade your fire safety system design unless more than 25% of the building is being altered or the building is going to undergo a change of use and building class. This means Sentry can adhere to the existing older standards when assisting with your fit-out.

Depending on the age and classification of the property you are working in, not all properties require the same systems. There are key triggers that determine if a property needs to have a certain fire safety system, such as the property’s effective height, floor area, total occupant load and building classes. This is why some buildings have nothing but extinguishers while others have additional sprinklers, detection and hydrant systems.

A change of use relates to when a property or part of a property is being re-classified, such as a retail store becoming an office or an educational training space. When this occurs the fire systems within the property may need to be upgraded or at least fully re-certified to ensure they meet the differing requirements of the new building class. This is typically completed by an AFSPAB Accredited Certifier which Sentry can arrange for you.
